Peanut wood jasper is actually toredo petrified wood. Teredo are mollusk that bored their way through the trees and are what became the white spots on the stone. The story is that the wood washed into the ocean and the teredo bored holes into the wood. When the wood became waterlogged it sank. The bore hole filled with sediment and eventually the piece became petrified. The mineral composition is jasper or chalcedony and has the same hardness as quartz.
