Daily Care

If substances such as cosmetics, hair spray, or perfume adhere to your jewels, they will lose their radiance, absorbing dirt and dust and causing alteration or loss of colour. Be sure to put on your jewelry after you do your make-up, and to wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth after use.

  • Check for loose gems and clasps before each wear.
  • Never remove jewelry by pulling on the gemstone. Pulling the stone exposes it to perspiration, skin oil and dirt, as well as the possibility it will become loose in its setting.
  • Remove all jewelry before sports, housework or yard work where jewelry could be exposed to impacts and/or chemicals.

Some gemstones require special care, but certain basic precautions apply to all jewelry set with gemstones. Avoid excessive impact against hard surfaces, extreme temperature changes and contact with perfumes, cosmetics and household chemicals. Prong settings are particularly vulnerable and should be examined regularly to be sure they hold the stone securely.

Storage

To store jewelry wrap each piece in velvet, paper, silk or a reclosable poly bag; or separate in sections of a jewelry box or fabric pouch.

Always fasten clasps and pins so that chains do not get tangled and jewels do not get scratched from rubbing against one another. Then lay each item out separately, one by one. If you carry your jewelry around, be sure to put it into a jewelry pouch.

Cleaning

Clean most gem-set jewelry with a mild soapy solution in warm water, a soft brush, and a soft cloth to pat dry.

Summary

Over time, jewelry can become a treasured family heirloom if it is cared for properly. Dust, pollution and daily wear all conspire to cloud the brilliance of gemstones. The surface of silver jewelry can become dulled. Time worn prongs and clasps can result in the loss of a stone or an entire piece of jewelry. Professional cleanings and inspections are recommended as often as once a year.
